Secrets To Success – Part 7 – Have A Code of Ethics
This is the 7th part of the ongoing secrets to success series – today, our topic is regarding how to have a code of ethics and morals and still be successful.
Adhere To A Code of Ethics/Morals
Do everything you do with honesty, courtesy, and follow a sincere set of morals and code of ethics in achieving your goals, or the other steps really won’t matter. If you get there, yet you stepped on, abused, mistreated, and otherwise wronged a number of people along the way, it wasn’t worth it. Period. There is no reason to feel you must do this to succeed. I feel that if you reach the end goal, and have lost friends, severed family relationships, perhaps lost a spouse, or otherwise lost the respect and love of those around you, you will have no one with which to celebrate.
Adhere To A Code of Ethics
Don’t forget to truly think about what you consider important in that regard. I am not here to tell you what is or isn’t correct in ethics and morals, but I think deep down in our hearts we all know what is and isn’t correct. If you make a promise, keep it. If you make a commitment, keep it. If you owe something, pay it. Those are the types of things I am referring to. Using and abusing others around you won’t make for a very happy life, and the purpose in achieving these goals is to make our lives better, not bring in stress. Ethics and morals in business, relationships, or other projects is essential to true success – both measurable and immeasurable.
Remember, the true measure of success is not have while you are here, but what you leave behind after you are gone. If you are only remembered due to being a terrible person, you haven’t left behind anything worth remembering.

It’s nice to see that someone adheres to some ideas that have pervaded the world for millenia, yet many still will go astray from these age old ideas. They were true ages ago, and like most truisms, are still true today. I only wish that these truths were imprinted onto the youth of America more often. This would require that, not just parents and family participate, but the entire nation be protagonists, without fail. The unethical would be shunned and the purists would ensure that the unethical, mean-hearted people would be branded as such. Alas, the perpetuation of greed has changed the hearts of America to bypass many of the base morals and beliefs of yesteryear. I feel like the tide will turn again towards this ideology when the “bubble bursts”. Thanks for the reminder!

Yes keeping your word is very important in the way one builds relationship. It gives you trust and respect in the eyes of the people that you are dealing with. The point about not burning bridges to achieve goal was right on the money. I have seen first hand
people who created chaos around them in the process of getting to the top. In the end they were the ones that had to leave the group. Was it worth doing it that way? I bet not!

You proved some very good points. Unfortunately everyone in our society isn’t as morally conscious. It would be nice, though. I suppose all we can do is ensure that we as individuals adhere to such personal codes of ethics and such.

I agree that every person and every business should adhere to a set of values or ethics. There are so many people out there that are only concerned about making money and not building relationships with their customers. If you are honest with your customers they will trust you and therefore bring more business.
